Maelstrom might be the first and most appropriate word that comes to mind in regard to today’s offering.  Coming courtesy of Malignant Records is the new release from Metadevice, Studies For A Vortex.
Andre Coelho, the individual behind Metadevice is also a founding member of the now-defunct Sektor 304 as well as a contributor to Beyond Enclosure.  His work has been described as “a cacophony of factory dirge, alienating drones and insectile frequencies, often with distorted rhythms and resonating clangs, and vocals that range from spoken word to more aggressive and in your face.”
Studies For a Vortex contains 10 tracks all of which are relatively short pieces; just right to take the listener on concise, yet effective trips.  There’s a lot going on in this release both stylistically and on an auditory level.  There are moments when Metadevice can merge primitive 90s industrial with ritual-ambient work like Trepaneringsritualen.  The vocals in a track like “Gorgoneion,” for example take on almost a narration-feel albeit more aggressive in some moments than in others.  In the same breath (and in this case, the same song) Metadevice manages to explore ways to create dynamic, dense soundscapes that range from uncomfortable to downright scary.
“Simulation” is the last track on the album and vocally is a bit reminiscent of later Sutcliffe Jugend while utilizing early SJ techniques of manipulating feedback.  It then goes into a feeling of death industrial mixed with a low-analog foundation.
Definitely for fans of the aforementioned Trepaneringsritualen, Einsturzende Neubauten.

Der Name Andre Coelho sollte eingefleischten Freunden der harschen Klänge durchaus ein Begriff sein, denn Sektor 304 war dessen maßgebliches geistiges Kind. Noch immer recht aktiv, so schlägt der Musiker nun mit einem neuen Projekt auf, welches unter dem Namen Metadevice fungiert, und deshalb auch (kaum verwunderlich) im Fahrwasser von Vertretern wie Strom. Ec , IRM, oder auch Trepaneringsritualen dümpelt. Das dahinter nun ein erfahrener Kenner am Schaffen ist, dies kristallisiert sich schon frühzeitig heraus, denn die Vernetzung von verzerrten Strukturen mit harscher Artikulierung will auch gekonnt sein, um nicht im sinnfreien Lärm zu driften. Gone are many of the “warmer” elements and the obvious human touch that comprised the full length debut - no scrap metal, no drums, and no vocals outside of the occasional samples. In its place, we’re confronted with 8 tracks of cold, synthesized throb and terminally doomed electronic currents, threaded with crackling skuzz, shuffling debris, and ominous interference. It’s a stripped down and despondent recording, about the loss of what we have as human beings, our capability to feel, experience and create, and all the more appropriate and befitting of current times.

Seventh review at LOUD! Magazine . Thank you for the support. Metadevice : Studies for a Vortex (Malignant; 2020) Há poucos músicos portugueses que sejam assertivos como André Coelho , co-fundador dos saudosos Sektor 304 – aquela besta Industrial de destruição total. Esta seria até a forma mais básica de apresentar Metadevice: é S304 mas só com Coelho e algumas participações externas pontuais, mas sobretudo sem as batidas poliritmicas e sincopadas de João Pais Filipe . Tudo é feito por ele até a excelente embalagem, cabeça, tronco e membros. Neste homúnculo sonoro não há aqui piadolas e nem fingimentos estéticos como 99% produção musical portuguesa – o que não impediu no passado de Coelho ter feito projectos iconoclastas ou provocantes.
